MACY’S 18th ANNUAL TREE LIGHTING CELEBRATES THE START OF THE HOLIDAY
SEASON AND BENEFITS THE YOUNG PATIENTS OF UCSF CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
Macy’s brightens the holidays by offering the public a chance to sponsor a light bulb to illuminate its 85-foot fir tree in Union Square SAN FRANCISCO, CA, NOVEMBER 1, 2007 – San Francisco’s most recognized Christmas tree will be officially lit at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, November 23rd in Union Square.
Macy’s gift to the city, an 85-foot California White Fir from the Carlton Tree Farm in Mount Shasta, will be adorned with thousands of twinkling, energy-efficient LED lights provided by PG&E and 1,500 red and gold ornaments. The Carlton family has been installing Christmas trees around the country for over 30 years, and has partnered with Macy’s since 1990.
For the fifth year, Macy’s has made UCSF Children’s Hospital the beneficiary of its annual tree lighting. For $10, anyone can sponsor a light bulb to illuminate the tree. All the proceeds will go directly to UCSF Children’s Hospital to benefit its specialized programs that provide the very best medical care and essential emotional support at the most difficult time for a family – when a child is faced with a lifethreatening illness. Last year, $145,000 was raised through the community’s efforts.
The public can make their donation to sponsor a light on the tree now through December 24 by visiting UCSF Medical Center/UCSF Children’s Hospital gift shop located at 505 Parnassus Avenue, by calling 888-689-UCSF, or by donating online at www.ucsfhealth.org/tree. All donations are tax deductible.
Macy’s 18th Annual Tree Lighting ceremony includes musical performances by the entire cast of the Tony Award-winning musical Jersey Boys. San Francisco Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White will accept the tree on behalf of the city. Chief Hayes-White will join Oakland A’s first baseman and UCSF event chair Nick Swisher and special guest Santa Claus in leading thousands of holiday revelers in a spirited countdown before throwing the switch on the tree.
Macy’s gives special thanks to PG&E, Viz Media, Jet Blue Airways, Chevy Volt, Starbucks, San Francisco Examiner, 7x7, California Home & Design, and Grand Hyatt, for making this beloved San Francisco holiday tradition possible.
Last year, Macy’s Union Square lit up the holidays with an exterior visual display unlike any other in San Francisco. For 2007, Macy’s will add even more sparkle to the season with the return of an LED lightshow on Macy’s Geary Street façade that will illuminate Union Square. Two 14-foot Martha Stewart Collection trim Christmas trees will glow in the Geary Street entrance windows. Festive, foliage-covered awnings twinkling with red lights will welcome shoppers into the store, and holiday greenery threaded with white lights will hug the women’s building from the intersection at O’Farrell and Powell streets to the corner of Stockton and Geary streets. This cheerful display is an exciting and visually stunning way for Macy’s – Union Square’s largest retailer – to celebrate the holiday season.
After the tree lighting and Geary façade light show, stroll over to Holiday Lane and enjoy entertainment by the Denton Brothers. Located on the sixth floor of Macy’s Union Square store, Holiday Lane is a paradise of lavishly decorated Christmas trees, thousands of ornaments, and other embellishments for the home. It’s the perfect place to find inspiration for your own seasonal decorating projects.
